Mackerel Fayre
The 2026 Fayre will take place at the museum on 17 May, starting at 12.30pm,to be opened by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Amanda Grimshaw BEM
For the first time in our long history, a lady vicar - Revd Buff Stone from St Luke's Prestonville - will start proceedings by presiding over the ceremony of 'The Blessing of The Nets', paying tribute to the brave tradition of local fisherman over many past centuries, and giving thanks for the riches of the sea in time-honoured custom.
In years past, local dippers and bathers would lead visitors to the town down to the beach to dip (ladies) and bathe (men) them in the local waters. 'Good for the health' said Dr Russell and he was right.
The most famous of these locals were Martha Gunn and Smoaker Miles - who will put in an appearance at the Fayre and tell us some tales of their life and work in those days. Looking forward to this one!
Music is always an important feature of Fayre Day. This year we have a return visit from "The Wreckers' from Newhaven, a motley crew of singers who will regale us some good old sea shanties to sing along to
The programme ends with an appearance from Brighton's foremost improvisation comedy troupe, "The Noise Next Door." 'Award-winning, twelve-time sell-out legends of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival who have blown audiences away on BBC One, ITV1, Comedy Central, and in comedy clubs and theatres all over the world'
Don't miss them!
See you all on 17 May and let's hope the sun shines
Brian Ogilvie (Treasurer/volunteer)
